Default If the internet is a reflection of human consciousness.....

.....what does it say about us?

If aliens were observing us via the content of the internet what opinions would they form of us?

I started writing a blog entry about this but wanted to hear your thoughts before I finish it.

So what does the internet say about us? Perhaps that we're very consumer-oriented (shopping sites), very horny (porn sites), a wee bit narcissistic (can't help but see social networking sites as thinly veiled narcissism - although not always), very opinionated (forums, reviews, opinions posted on just about everything), obsessed over strangely insignificant things like celebrity lifestyles (entertainment sites)...and of course news sites display the whole gamut of human dysfunctionality. And yet, shining beacons of light are amid the darkness of cyberspace - sites such as this, and sites devoted to the wisdom of spiritual teachers both alive and passed on.

So what do you think the internet says about us? What would those aliens think of us judging by the content of the internet...???

If all you heard were the calls of howler monkeys, would you summize the totality of the animals in what you heard? Or would you seek a more complete understanding?
Lucid my friend, we are those howler monkeys.

You make an excellent point actually, I never considered that angle. It IS all noise - mental noise. And we can't confuse content (the content of our psyche, soul, totality) with essence (what we truly are). But the content is still there - and it's on the net for all to see. What would an impartial analyst make of the 'full catastrophe' of human living - our history of total insanity and mindless conflicts and wars is there for all to see. I remember Eckhart Tolle stating that if the human collective were to be analysed as an individual would be the diagnosis would be 'criminally insane, with just a few brief moments of lucidity.'

I can't help but feel the internet reflects this insanity...and also the increasing lucidity. We're gradually waking up to our insanity, and this awakening dispels the darkness and heals us. It is necessary to recognise the insanity for what it is, though.

So what do I think aliens would make of us based upon the 'noise' we make? Probably "dangerous, insane, but gradually waking up." Hopefully they'd see the potential that's there, the diamond amid the mud...

Anyway I am definitely rambling now...I still believe the content of the internet can be a fascinating analysis of the current state of our consciousness...although as Psyche said - beyond that 'noise', that external content is a far deeper essence - an essence which HAS to emerge more fully now in order to guarantee our future survival as a species.

In my simple opinion ... I think if 'aliens' were to observe us via the internet ... they would take the position of a research scientist; because they would have no prior knowledge of us to formulate any opinion(s) and would observe us from a distance with perhaps, mild interest.

Like a research scientist observing the howler monkies for the first time ... I think with all the information the 'aliens' could possibly gather and piece together to create some sort of puzzle, the 'aliens' overall conclusion of us, would be that the human race is simple and complex, and can never be fully understood, not even by us.

      Just my 2 cents ....

      I agree.
I think this tells a truth. I think all systems may contain a lot of useless junk e.g. the Earth, the body (junk DNA), the Internet. Some can be salvaged into the useful e.g. Art, mutations. I suppose Aliens who are highly advanced would probably know this - or perhaps they are so advanced that they come not to believe it - much like our ancient beliefs.

      Just my two cents.

      regards,

      Nathan

[ Two cents goes a long way when invested properly.]

Lucid, you are right to raise such questions. Through such sharing as is occurring here we achieve a greater understanding of ourselves as well as the situation at hand.
Never settle for status quo. And always look beyond what your told, to the source of the truth.
It may take some digging in the dirt but it's always here for us to find.

Like some of the hurrid rash things us humans do...would they take the time to sift through all the dross to reach the truth, that which is vital to who we truly are at our essence??
I like to think they might and that as curious as we can be sometimes, curiousity may lead them to think we may be worth deeper investigation

i think aliens observation of us would be comedic to them (unless of course they are mirror images of us or vice versa) assuming they are one of two 1. advanced technologically to the point where our own technology is primitive and funny to them 2. they have chosen to revert to primitve ways and shunned technology being in every home therefore pity us

i often think this too what do they think ? are they sad about how we live ,what we do, the suffering ,the imbalance in power, celebrity worship as you said ,material worship all of it ..
