Default Favourite Albums of All Time

I wanted to create a thread where people can share their favourite albums of all time! I am very much an album person, I rarely listen to isolated songs, I want to full experience of an album, a journey in sound with a beginning, middle and an end. This thread is a tribute to albums that have moved you in some way. Write a few comments about the album, why you love it and maybe include a song or two

I would like to start off with an album I've had for several years but which I am currently transfixed by...

      ( ) by Sigur Ros

This album is not perhaps the most accessible for the Sigur Ros albums, I would recommend newbies first check out 'Agaetus Byrjun', 'Meo Suo I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust' or 'Takk'. The untitled '( )' is a more demanding listen, but is worth the investment - it's a work of art. Sigur Ros famously said in an early interview that they don't intend to become superstars, but they were going to change the way people think about music, and I'd say they certainly have. They are, in my view, the only band that have matched, and possibly eclipsed Pink Floyd when it comes to vast, expansive soundscapes, innovation and experimentation.

As with Agaetis Byrjun, their breakthough album, ( ) is a product of the band's origin. Roughly split into two parts, each with four tracks, it conjures images of snow-covered mountains and vast icy wildernesses. It is sung in 'Hopelandic', an invented language and apparently features only twelve syllables sung throughout the album in different ways. The first four songs (each track is untitled, although there are names out there) are comparatively serene and majestic - achingly sad and delicate, deep, lush and evocative. Soundscape music at its best. An almost otherworldly quality pervades the music, like alien lullabies, and yet earthy at the same time.

The last four songs are perhaps more intense and demanding. The latter tracks evoke a post-apocalyptic wilderness...everything has been destroyed. Jonsi, whose voice is a remarkable instrument in itself, sings with haunting beauty and power, as if expressing all of humanity's pain, fragility, tenderness, hope and love...echoes in an icy wilderness. In turns ethereal and earthy, he sings with a power and passion that might almost make Lisa Gerrard blush. The last two songs, in particular the remarkable final piece, gradually evolve from flowing, placid and peaceful into rousing, raging and dramatic finales filled with almost unbearable emotion.

This album is deeply beautiful and sad, powerful and intense. It crafts incredible soundscapes and is immensely evocative and moving. It may be too raw or alternative for some, but for those with an open mind, it is an incredible experience in sound. I love it just as much as the other Sigur Ros albums, but for some reason I'm hooked on this one in particular at the moment. Again, I'd recommend people check out the other albums before this one though, they are probably necessary primers!

Thanks Sean (and for the rep!), I can't wait to see your choices - and everyone else's, don't be shy! I love reading people's comments on what music means to them, I find it quite inspiring in some way ! I will see what others I'd like to nominate for our MW album hall of fame!

Glad you enjoyed the songs...just realised that the last track cuts off before the end, which is unfortunate, but the track was probably longer than youtube allows. (and what's with all the ads on youtube videos now? Google is evil! LOL)

If I could only have one CD/Album to listen to for the rest of my lifetime it would be this one, "Migration" by R. Carlos Nakai & Peter Kater. It is for myself the most spiritually moving music I have ever heard. I've spent many hours meditating while listening to this. And have experienced visions as I did so. It is the one I would never do without.
Still trying to locate tracks to share. Until then, this is the cover art...

      The Stone Roses debut album

There are not many albums were I love every track on the album but this one I do, There is not a bad track on it, It was released in 1989 and after all the crap pop and dance we had been bombarded with in the late 80s this came along and was like a breath of fresh air, It was new, vibrant and just blew me away. I cannot belive its been out over 20 years (It still sounds as fresh as ever now) The follow album Second Coming was also good but was never going to match the hype. I played this album to death in the early 90s and It is still a constant on my ipod

Definately one of the best debut albums ever made and If I was stranded on a little desert island I would want this with me...

      One of Manchesters finest

Haha I was also getting round to posting Le Roi Est Mort Vive Le Roi!! It's still my favourite album of all time as well, so so rich, deep, transcendent and beautiful...it has a beauty tempered with passion, a sublime mixture of the ethereal and earthy. A true masterpiece and one that touched my soul very deeply with its themes, lyrics and soundscapes!! Michael Cretu's masterpiece and crowning glory.

      Santana - Caravanserai - 1971
One of the most influential fusion recordings of all time and the album that cemented Carlos' legendary status as both a rock and jazz guitarist

      Santana - Borboletta - 1973
Spiritually inspiring and the best lineup ever on a record with Airto Moreia, Flora Purim, Leon Patillo, Alphonso Johnson and Stanley Clarke, all superstars in their own right, embedded as Santana band members (unlike Supernatural which were guest appearances)

King Crimson - The Court of the Crimson King - 1969
The most recognizable album cover of all time and one of the finest progressive recordings ever produced

      King Crimson - Discipline - 1981
The reinvented King Crimson with Adrien Belew, Tony Levin, and Bill Bruford joining KC founder Robert Fripp. Elephant Talk, Thela Hun Gungit...an awesome record perfect for the times

      Led Zepplin 4 - 1971
Perhaps the 2nd greatest album of all time

The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band -1967
The greatest of them all, this record changed music forever

The Beatles - The White Album - 1968
While it was clear that the Fab 4 had become more individuals than a group at this point, no Beatles record gives a greater sense of the individual visions that made up The Beatles than this one. A true masterpiece.

VAST- Video Audio Sensory Theater - 1998
The first time I heard this record, my jaw dropped. Its still in that posotion. The true inspiration for Black Ether

      VAST - Nude - 2004
Jon Crosby at his absolute best

Dream Theater - Images and Words - 1992
I hear people talk about concept albums all the time. Well, you havent heard a TRUE concept album until youve heard this one from the most talented group of rock musicians ever assembled into a band.

      Dream Theater - Score- 2006
Recorded at Radio City Music Hall as a 25th Anniversary homecoming for the legendary New York Band with a full symphony orchestra. I was there and this was one of the most memorable shows Id ever attended. Artistry just oozes from this record.

      The Clash - London's Calling -
If punk has an anthemn, this is it! One of the few records that literally changed my life.

      The Clash - Sandanista
I dont think any record ever produced fused more influences and sounds into a single vision than this one. In my book the greatest punk album ever made.

      The Cure - Pornography
Incredibly bold for its time, this record ushered in the post punk era with a vengence.

The Cure - The Head on the Door
This album really showed the diversity of what would become one of todays most legendary bands. Incredibly polished, yet ever so full of angst. Love it.

The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
If you take half of the songs out of this 2 disc set, you end up with what many consider the best ambient rock album ever made.

      The Mission UK - Children - 1988
When Wayne Hussy left the Sisters of Mercy to form The Mission (Mission UK in the US), I dont think anyone thought that this new band would end up becoming the barameter by which all goth bands would be measured. This, the 3rd album from The Mission, and the only one produced by legendary Led Zepplin bassist John Paul Jones is nothing short of a miraculous display of gothic artistry.

      Porcupine Tree - In Absentia - 2002
Every so often an album comes along that redefines the musical soundscape. This album, the 7th from the British progressive outfit, pretty much announced to the world that a new progressive movement had taken over. They havent let up since. This album is ranked in the top 100 metal albums, the top 100 progressive albums, the top 100 rock albums, the top 100, and the top 100 post modern rock albums of all time. No other record has ever achieved this.

      Porcupine Tree - Deadwing - 2005
The followup to In Absentia, this puppy was even better...... In my eyes, the best modern progressive record ever

      Riverside - Out of Myself - 2001
When the Berlin Wall came tumbling down in 89, a lot of great things emerged from behind the darkness that was the Iron Curtain. One of the best was this band out of Warsaw, Poland that plays with a passion rarely felt in modern music. A stunning album that reminds us that we are all linked by music.

Mike Oldfield - Songs of Distant Earth
The absolute best thing to ever come out of the enigmatic genre, hands down, from one of the most influential artists ever. Stunningly beautiful and the only TRUE concept album in the genre.

      Babe Ruth - First Base - 1971
I find it pretty funny that this record's hit single, The Mexican, is a BBoy standard. In fact, that song is the anchor for one of the best progressive albums of its time featuring the vocals of Jennie Haan, who may as well be the reincarnation of Janis Joplin...she was THAT good.

      more to come

Some great choices there Jay love Londons Calling, I grew up listening to a lot of Punk, Ska and Reggae..

This is one of my favorite albums, Signing Off (which means signing off the unemployment register) before UB40 became poppy they had some serious messages and reflections on british society during the Thatcher era. This was brought out at a time when millions were unemployed and had little hope of finding work. Its quite a dark record ,nearly every track is about a serious issue such as the ethiopian famine, Unemployment, British Imperialism.. It is easily UB40s best album..

The front cover and reverse has been made to look like the UB40 unemployment benefit attendance card from which the band took their name.

Default The Books - The Lemon of Pink

The Books make music from a collage of sounds, including guitar and cello, and also PVC pipe, metal springs, and percussion machines built by themselves. Very often they include vocal samples from a variety of sources like old instruction and self-help videos, TV programs, and even tapes from those old Talk-Boy toys. They've been described and folktronica, experimental, and from me, just plain awesome.

They have four albums, which are all different from each other, and magnificent in their own way. The Lemon of Pink really stands out though. Relaxing, intriguing, funny, exciting, beautiful with subtle underlying melodies that may initially seem like just a mish-mash of sounds. This album changes with each listen.

The best album of all time is "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel.

It flows really well and tells an beautiful story. As far as music goes it is top notch.

And also Jason Derulo's album "Ridin' Solo" is great.

Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror - Harold Budd & Brian Eno

One of the most beautiful albums every made. Brian Eno and Harold Budd pioneered ambient music and what later became new age music, but these early works were rarely if ever bettered. I rarely listen to much new age music as I find a lot of it lacks depth and artistic merit, but I believe this masterpiece is a true artistic accomplishment and is as close to perfect as it gets.

Its gentle, hypnotic waves of sound are so delicate and ethereal that they carry the listener to whole other worlds. Budd's piano playing is magical, recalling the style of Erik Satie, while Eno applies subtle layers of electronics and effects to create evocative moods, styles and ambience.

Brian Eno's 'manifesto' for ambient music was that, depending on one's mood or preference, it could function as either unobtrusive background music, or for full-on listening and immersion. This is a great example of that. It is great music for creativity, relaxation or as I frequently use it, to help me drift off to sleep. A truly beautiful album. It's hard to pick out favourite tracks because they all fuse wonderfully to create a cohesive whole. The song titles are great, because they really capture the sound and feel of the songs themselves. The songs really do sound like the titles!

The Pearl - Harold Budd & Brian Eno

Brian Eno and Harold Budd later teamed up to create 'The Pearl' which is also very beautiful and immersive. It's just a little bit darker, the melodies more subliminal and there is greater ambience. I love it as well. Here are some tracks from The Pearl.

Embrace are one of my favorite bands, They are an English post-britpop band from Bailiff Bridge, Brighouse, West Yorkshire. To date they have released five studio albums and are due to release another. They released 3 albums but were dopped by their record company in 2002, To years later they cameback with an epic album Out of Nothing which spawned numerous singles including the brilliant Ashes and Glorious Day

The next album This New Day is one of my favorite albums of all time, It is full of Anthems of Hope and always lifts my spirits when I listen to it.... Released 5 years ago I still listen to it often. I have seen them lots of times live including once in the gothic town hall were I live and once in the middle of a forest which was a magical experience....
