Been thinking a lot about my parents this week and the music I grew up listening to....makes me realise how much good music they introduced me too and I'd like to share some of it if you will indulge me.
I love Burt Bacharach songs and its amazing how many brilliant songs he has written...here are some of my favourites...

Gotta love Karen Carpenters voice...pure and sublime...

The Carpenters were also one of my parents favourite groups and I would like to share some of my favourites...Karen's voice was just the best and I think she had one of the best vocals for a woman ever....she was also a very accomplished drummer! Its such a shame she died so young!

Ok, im going to take you down roads Im sure most, if not none, of you even heard of. I had the distinct pleasure of growing up in one of the worlds great music meccas in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn (although back then almost no one really understood that). WillyB was then and is still generally the heart of the music underground.

Im going to start with an artist whose life was tragic, but who left a legacy that dominates the music world today.

In the 2 month period of September and October of 1970, the world lost three of its most influential artists. TWo of them, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin are widely known and celebrated. The third was unknown in the mainstream even though he was a regular touring partner of Sly and the Family Stone. But both the hip hop and breakbeat worlds owe their existance to rockers like this individual....Baby Huey. Baby Huey died of a heart attack in October 1970, the direct result of a glanular condition that resulted in extreme obesity. He took the stage name of Baby Huey as a sort of tongue in cheek way of making fun of what was a very serious health problem. Like Jimi and Janis, he was just 27 when he passed and in the world I came from, he was a much bigger artist than either of them. Sadly, the world forgot this man. But ask modern day hip hop and breakbeat producers which artists influenced them most, and most will include this man on their list.

Now this next tune is one I consider one of the best songs ever written. Performed by the british progressive outfit Babe Ruth, it ironically is considered a BBoy classic today. Featuring the voice of Jenny Haan, this song was recently featured in the movie Samuri Jack and has been remixed countless times, most notably by Jellybean Benitez (made his career!)

From the album First Base, The Mexican

Now I hated disco, with a passion. But every so often one of those artists would do something that would make me stand up and pay attention. Eddie Drennon is best known for mega disco hits like Lets Do the Latin Hustle (barf!!!). But on that same album was this track, which is loaded with atmosphere and intended structured ambience. This song was a game changer for me as an artist and is deeply rooted in what would become Black Ether.

ancd it came from all over the world. How many of you have ever heard of Osibisa? They were only the biggest act ever from Africa, amazing talent and the advent of what we now call world music. I was listening to this stuff in the early 70s.

Now everybody's heard of Get Ready from Rare Earth, but in the world I came from, that song was child's play. You were no one if you didnt have this record, now one of the rarest albums on the planet featuring the WillyB rock classic, "I couldn't Believe What Happened Last Night"

And yes I have the record!
