Im starting up a new this new thread....
Not sure if you all use Mandalas......
but in this thread I would love for it to be a HUGE MANADALA ARCHIVE where we post PHOTOS of your mandalas for everyone to use....
and return to them whenever we feel the need to

Mandala (Sanskrit maṇḍala "essence" + "having" or "containing", also translates as "circle-circumference" or "completion", both derived from the Tibetan term dkyil khor) is a concentric diagram having spiritual and ritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism. The term is of Hindu origin and appears in the Rig Veda as the name of the sections of the work, but is also used in other Indian religions, particularly Buddhism. In the Tibetan branch of Vajrayana Buddhism, mandalas have been developed into sandpainting. They are also a key part of anuttarayoga tantra meditation practices.
In various spiritual traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of aspirants and adepts, as a spiritual teaching tool, for establishing a sacred space, and as an aid to meditation and trance induction. According to David Fontana, its symbolic nature can help one "to access progressively deeper levels of the unconscious, ultimately assisting the meditator to experience a mystical sense of oneness with the ultimate unity from which the cosmos in all its manifold forms arises." The psychoanalyst Carl Jung saw the mandala as "a representation of the unconscious self, and believed his paintings of mandalas enabled him to identify emotional disorders and work towards wholeness in personality.
In common use, mandala has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the Universe from the human perspective.

Dont have much photos on my new mac book pro ....
but will add manadlas in time....

Wow, this is going to be a great thread to visit! Thanks!

A mandala is a projection of the physics of Mind superimposed over the physics of the universe. It is a map, in other words (especially the more complicated ones) giving directions from Chaos to Order, within and without.

Mind and everything happening outside the mind (the rest of the universe) are each the other's physics because they share the very same Core (but we are not inventing it all!).

A wonderful way to *experience* a mandala is at the beginning of what is just about my favorite movie of all time, Kundun...the story of the Dalai Lama in Tibet. (Kundun means "Presence" in Tibetan and is the everyday name/title for the DL).

The movie begins with a gorgeous close-up of a sand mandala and the camera moves around it, while monks chant, so it can be intensely *experienced* and realized as more than just a pretty picture. The overseer of its accuracy is mentioned in the ending credits. I believe he is the same actual Tibetan monk who plays a monk very close to the Dalai Lama in the movie itself, one who definitely captured my heart! I love his chanting!

I ADORE this movie and have seen it literally hundreds of times. For a long while it was the background ambience of my home (as I was dealing with realizing 9/11/01 beginning two years before it manifested, among others. The movie actually shows the Tibetan regent (who runs the country while the DL is a child) and also the Dalai Lama having precognitions just as I have (and the physics of them), so it was incredibly comforting to my sanity. The Dalai Lama himself was an advisor for this movie! (Seven Years in Tibet also shows the DL having precognitions, where the real DL's sister plays his mother. Her daughter is the DL's mother in Kundun!) The actors in the movie are actual Tibetans, and several of the primary actors are actually genuine members of the Dalai Lama's own real family (playing the DL, his brother, his mother, the second regent, etc).

I was trying to find a video of the gorgeous close ups of the sand mandala the movie opens with but haven't so far. Here is at least a Preview (http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi369229849/) for the movie itself, where the mandala plays such a significant role, beginning to end. The Preview shows several scenes of the Dalai Lama's/regent's precognitions.

Sand is used to create the mandala (without being glued down) to express the impermanence of all things, the translucence of reality. (I'll say! There was a video of a child kicking and destroying an unfinished mandala several monks were spending hours/days to make, and had taken a break from, that wound up all over the news and on aol a year or two ago!)
Ah, here's the story (http://www.geekologie.com/2007/05/toddler_destroyes_monks_sand_p.php).

:Housework :mask.1:

There are many videos of mandala making (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=youtube+sand+mandalas&search_type=&aq=f) and their significance on youtube.

Thank you for sharing everyone.

Its funny I keep getting the urge (and being directly told by others) to create my own mandalas. I may just do that.

And yes, MysteriousOne, Kundun is one of my all-time favourite films. So rich and powerful and moving!

I'll be back :)

This is a mandala that was created in the high street here in Galway. It was made from shells, crystals - amethyst, rose quartz etc and was about 5 - 6 foot across.
It was beautiful!!
