The pilot of a passenger plane which crash-landed in New York's Hudson River has been praised for saving the lives of all 155 people on board.

The US Airways jet came down shortly after taking off from the city's La Guardia airport.

It is thought to have hit a flock of birds, which disabled two engines, said a US official.

The Airbus A320, with 150 passengers and five crew, was destined for Charlotte airport in North Carolina when the accident happened.

There were reports of some injuries - but everyone is believed to have survived.

The jet took off at 3:26pm local time (8:26pm UK time) and was in the air for just three minutes.

The man at the controls was identified in the US media as former military fighter pilot Chelsey B "Sully" Sullenberger.

He radioed flight controllers that he had hit birds a few miles from the airport, law enforcement sources said.

Passengers said the captain told them to brace for impact and then the plane came down.

Emergency services then tried to get the passengers off the aircraft as quickly as possible.

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said the pilot did a "wonderful job" of landing the plane on water and that he walked through the plane twice to make sure no one was left on board before leaving himself.

New York governor David Paterson called it a "miracle on the Hudson".

Now that, is a man to trust your life with, job well done!

If I were on that plane and survived the landing, I would have definitely kissed the pilot on the lips! WOW!
