Anybody want to recommend any good movies to watch, I have seen a few over the last few weeks that I thought were pretty good. better be careful not to post any possible spoilers for people who have not see the films...

I watched this last night

Four Christmases (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369436/)

Its about a couple (Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn) who try to avoid seeing the family over the christmas holidays but find they have no choice, very funny.

Also watched

"Taken (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0936501/)"

which is a very good action thriller staring "Liam Neeson" about an ex CIA operative searching for his daughter.

There is a lot of buzz about "Twilight (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1099212/)" anybody seen it yet?

I saw 'Serpico' for the first time not long ago. Excellent movie and Al Paccino is great there.

The last Will Smith film I watched was "Hancock" which was funny, an alcoholic superhero crashing into signs and cars and stuff and not caring what he trashed lol. The other movies I have seen him in over the last few years have also been excellent, "The pursuit of happyness" and the brilliant "I am Legend"

Love Al Pacino, Serpico is a great film, I watched Scarface recently for the first time in Years, what a movie

My partner would probably like 'The Other Boleyn Girl' she is into all these period dramas, she loves anything to do with Anne Boleyn or Henry VIII.

"Say hello to my little friend!" :D

I must've seen Scarface 5 times already. Paccino there is better than in The Godfather 1&2 in my opinion.

I am a big fan of gangster movies, one of my favorites is "Once upon a time in America" an fantastic film. A new mob film staring Robert De Niro is being made called "Frankie machine" about an ex mob hit man coming out of retirement, due in 2010. Al Pacino and De Niro have made some awesome mob films

Oh yes, City of God, is a very good gan-sta film, long, but good! After watching it, I found it really hard to believe that Gisele Bunchen and her twin came from the ghettos of Rio de Janeiro....lucky I guess?

Well, I am taking a wild guess here, but since your from the UK and dig gangster films, that you have seen Guy Ritches films Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.....I love Snatch....never thought I would love a violent movie....but I love this one!

Oh, I love this thread! I know I'll be adding more movies titles here!

Your dead right Sphinx, I love Guy Ritchies movies, Snatch is excellent , violent but funny and Brad Pitt as the Irish gypsy with his mad dialect :D

Lock Stock is one of my favorite movies, great characters, real criminals, superb story and soundtrack, Vinnie Jones was the star of this film in my book you wouldn't think he had only been in a few films before this..

"It's been emotional." ... :D what a classic line

What I like about Tim Burton's work, is that he employs Johnny Depp in almost everything he does! :)

Similar to Ivory Merchant, they always use the same cast of actors (more-or-less) Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham-Carter, Rupert Graves, and Simon *what's his last name*?....hmm, I'll look for it and add it later.

I know that either Ivory or Merchant, passed away within the past few years!

Together they did, A Room with a View, Where Angels Fear to Tread, Howard's End, and Maurice and a few other films which I can't remember right now.....

Peter and I recently saw "Zack and Miri Make a Porno". It's not for everyone but as we're big Kevin Smith fans, we just loved it. Not for the faint hearted or the easily offended but absolutely hilarious otherwise.

Once of the last movies I saw before that was quite a while ago but I highly recommend is 'Smart People'. It's a bit quirky and slightly odd but I think that's mainly why I like it. It's a bit messed up and so untraditional for a movie which I find attractive in a film. It stars Dennis Quaid and also Sarah Jessica Parker in a very unlikely role.

If you liked 'Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind' then I think you'd like it.

Last night I sow "The Chronicles of Narnia - Prince Caspian" and I was kinda disappointed :) I liked first part, it was a real fairytale and a real movie for kids.

Sure, some things were ridiculous, but since it is a fairytale, anything goes and it was very fun :girl_yes3 (1): Prince Caspian is much darker, I know C.S.Lewis and Tolkien were friends and he didn't like Lewis's first book, so yes I can kinda feel that in Prince Caspian. Prince Caspian in my opinion is a strange mix of old Narnia and Lord of the Rings. I also checkout out some of future Narnia books and it does not go any better, in fact it gets weirder and weirder and I don't like it. Idea was good, but writer kinda ruined spirit of first book when he decided to play Tolkien and trying to replicate his mystical world as his own. Also, I think they chose wrong guy for the part, of well.. Only thing I like about movie are "mice" :D LOL I hope someone else will liked this movie...

On the other hand, I liked last two James Bond movies I also sow recently :P

I haven't seen any Chronicles of Narnia movies... because I saw Eragon and right after I saw it I realize that after LOTR every movie about mystical worlds will not be good enough:girl_yes3 (1):... but Harry Potter's... I loooove all those movies.. can't wait for the next Harry Potter movie btw.

I know what you mean :) LOTR was a huge hit and we all expected more movies in the genre, but with Narnia its different, because first book or movie is for kids and its really interesting. Other Narnia books and movie sequel are not, its something weird. Harry Potter is good, I only read last two books and I liked them a lot :) Yes, last two books are a bit darker then previous movie, but very exciting. I remember reading them in just a few days when ever I could get any time. Movies will be good I think, but I don't like why they divided last movie into two ? I'd prefer one 3,5 h movie :D lol

I think first Narnia movie or even better a book is really cool and its a good thing to check it out with you godson :)

Its a shame they didn't do a film of the first book The Magicians Nephew...I have read all the books several times and it does explain how things came about...also there is another book between the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe...the Horse and his Boy. Unfortunately with Hollywood, they tend to only do the most popular books...look at LOTR...they should have done the Hobbit first as many who haven't read LOTR will get an understanding of the story much better.
I loved Caspian...thought it was a great version and remember, these are children's books and CS Lewis did tell a great childrens story...loved the Alice books too :)

OH, I LUVRE :two hearts: The Chronicles of Narnia :two hearts: The entire set of the books was giving to me as an X-Mas years ago, and have great pleasure in reading all the books many times over! :)

I have the BBC version of The Chronicles of Narnia on dvd. The books that became films are The Loin, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Prince Caspian. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. and The Silver Chair.

Oh, Lorri, I love the The Magician's Nephew, I don't know why I love it so much, but I do!

I can just see the scene where Digory and Polly and Queen Jadis of Charn walk out of the great castle, and survey the cold quiet emptiness of the once great city known as Charn.....*wow*....what an amazing scene....

ps: You may have noticed my location is....Aslan's Country and always will be in my :two hearts:! :)

Simple because George Lucas had to fit and adjust some parts in the storyline concerning the life of Anakin Skywalker.

Also the ideas he had how the first 3 chapters of the whole Star Wars saga should look like was impossible to realize with the technology back then. So he waited with the filming of the first 3 chapters to achieve his goal and to make the movies look as he had in his mind.

I disliked the last 3 star wars films, The acting and dialogue was bad in the first 3 but they were enjoyable stories and groundbreaking special effects at the time, in the new ones it was atrocious :( Hayden Christensen was awful in the role of Anakin and just spoilt the last two films for me. I think I was expecting too much.

The Phantom Menace was one of the most disappointing films I have ever seen.

Ow Wanted ?...I see it as a waste of talent, the acting prowess of Morgan freeman and Macavoy could've been utilized in a much better way, supported by a good script.....and Angelina Jolie? Supposedly the most beautiful women in the world ? Well she is a victim of her own glamour.

I watched 4 movies since yesterday......

1.BEAUFORT :The film is about an IDF (Israel defence forces)unit stationed at the Beaufort post in Lebanon during the Lebanon conflict,It chronicles the daily routine of a group of soldiers positioned at the Beaufort Castle, their feelings and their fears,....A good movie ,But i am a bit surprised though about it's nomination for Oscars .

2.CITY OF WOMEN :It's an Italian movie about a man who gets lost in a city full of women with ideologies of feminism, interesting mix of eroticism, fiction and a bit of madness :D

3.ZODIAC :Based on actual events during the 60's,It's about the hunt for a serial killer whom they could never catch even with all those letters he sent to the police giving details of how he committed those crimes........The case is unsolved.

4.SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE :Set in Mumbai ,it's about a guy from the slums of mumbai who goes on to win 20 million rupees in a game show and how he does it.........A very good movie :good2

Zodiac is an excellent movie. Actually all of David fincher's movies are great. cant wait to see the curious case of Benjamin Button.

On a different note - Dissaster! I read that Eddie Murphy is going to play the Riddler in the new Batman. Too bad Johnny Depp decided to play in Tim Burton's Alice in wonderland instead. I hope Murphy wont suck too much...

I'm with Gollum on the "Wanted" bandwagon. I absolutely loved this movie, in fact I bought the deluxe DVD set for it. I just took it at face value, nothing deep at all and totally enjoyed every minute of it.

I really enjoyed "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg. I find I like quite a few of his movies, although I haven't seen all of them, so probably shouldn't generalize.

I have a few Canadian recommendations for stories - no action, big effects etc, just good story telling. "The Stone Angel" is an adaptation of a novel (I might add I can't stand to read her stuff), but made me think of my own life. "Normal" was also an interesting movie - it's about the stories of the people after a drunk driving killing. I can't use the word "accident" when it comes to drunk drivers. It follows the family of the boy is murdered, his close friend and the family dynamics there, the guy who murdered him and how he deals with the aftermath. Really sad, but really insightful and true to life.

For good fun and sing-a-long, nothing beats "Mama Mia" for me at the moment. A totally fun movie.

APPALOOSA : Ed harris and his deputy Vigo mortensson is hired by the authorities of the town of Appaloosa to deal with the menace of a killer...all's well until the arrival of this filthy whore with her sinister plans to break the relationship of Ed harris and his friend, using her sex as the weapon.....but they are real wise men who don't fall prey to her........Damn he should've blown her head off as soon as he finds her with the villain....well that was my first reaction to that scene but there's more to it......A good movie, was worth my time and money.

... : The Dark Knight : ...

Well, for as hyped up as this movie was and for as excited as I was to see it, I don't think it was all that and a bag of chips!

Although, I do agree with many that, Heath Ledger (may he rest in peace) did a stellar and wicked performance as the Joker, it's trully ashame that he is no longer with us...he was a great actor!

And, as for Batman, well, he was hardly in the film. It's almost like his character was a secondary thought, and when he was, he was annoyingly difficult to understand....with his super-hushed-raspy voice.

The movie was long, hard plot to follow, way too special effects, way too much going on, and quite honestly, it didn't strike me as a classic comic-book Batman movie!

So, for as the highest grossing film ever, I really didn't like it much, but I did enjoy it (believe or not) and I am glad I didn't waste any money seeing in the theatre.

Please, take no offense, to those who really enjoyed it!

I enjoyed 'the dark knight' right from the first minute, and not only because of the Joker, his character was a plus among many other pluses......It had a racy screenplay unlike the other super hero flicks where the protagonist hops over buildings.....
a very good performance from Christian bale,Aaron Eckhart ,Gary oldman and not to mention Heath ledger :good2

Burn After Reading :Supposedly a funny movie where nobody is faithful to anyone and everybody sleeps with someone other than there spouses .....but i have to say i did enjoy the movie ,it's full of serious ,tragic fun....Clooney and Pitt are in their unusual self.

Valkyrie:Based on actual events during WWll.A plot to assassinate Hitler by Germans themselves.....Yet another movie to remind the world about the evils of fascism.

As for Batman ? Dark Knight and Tim Burton's Batman are totally two different Batmans. HL was very good in the movie and in a way he really was the main focus of the movie, probably not attentional, but he was phenomenal. Burton's Batman is so different, no realy way to compare these two.

A few films I have watched this week

Seven Pounds (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0814314/)

Starring Will Smith, An IRS agent with a fateful secret embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers

I was looking forward to watching this, Im glad I never went to the pictures to see it, Was a very slow film was falling asleep half way through it. Spent half the film wondering why he was doing what he was doing.. ending was ok but the film left me feeling a bit depressed.

Baylon A.D. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364970/)

Veteran-turned-mercenary Thoorop takes the high-risk job of escorting a woman from Russia to America. Little does he know that she is host to an organism that a cult wants to harvest in order to produce a genetically modified Messiah.

not a bad story, but im really not a fan of Vin Deasel and in this film as always he just comes across as a macho idiot.

The Objective (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0962711/)

A group of Special Ops Reservists on a mission in the harsh and hostile terrain of Afghanistan find themselves lost in a Middle Eastern "Bermuda Triangle" of ancient evil.

Sort of a cross between Apocalypse now and Predator, and nowhere as good as either.

Yeah yeah I know...we all have our dark sides and even I like to watch an action film!! :pilot:

3:10 to Yuma 1957 version. Starring Glenn Ford and Van Helfin.

3:10 to Yuma 2007 version. Starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe.

Personally, I perferred the 1957 version, even though I am not a total fan of the (over saturated) 1950's western films, still, it was better than 2007 version.

Basic plot of both films, set in the post-civil war west, an Arizona rancher helps to get an outlaw/prisoner onto the 3:10 train to Yuma, lots of gun slinging and self-reflection occurrs in both films, but less blood in shed in the 1957 version.

Both films have different endings.

Maybe we were watching it the same night, Paul and I watched it too, it's one of my favourite films from when I was I kid!.....Gotta love the brash Sea Captain! :)

"I'll polish his brass for him!" ...or...."I mean MEN, not perfumed parlor snakes!"

[Later Edit]

Back to 3:10 to Yuma, both films are not bad and I enjoyed them, individually, very much!

If, you like the classic 1950's Western film, than you'll like the 1957 version. Filmed in B&W, it has less 'action' and the inner workings of the plot are 'easier' to follow and it's not cluttered with side stories. The costumes are okay. The acting at times is a little cheezy, but overall it is good. Some scenes are drawn out.

If, you like the Hollywood-of-today spin on Westerns than you'll like the 2007 version. The landscape of Arizona is beautiful with all it's rich colour. The costumes are great and totally authentic! In the area(s) in the 1957 version, where scenes were drawn out, the 2007 version fills that in with more gun shooting, more blood, hyped-up drama, interesting actualities of the times, and of course a 21st century Hollywood film is not complete without, yep, special effects.

Well, both films are enjoyable and it's fun to compare! :)

The reason, I perfer the 1957 version, is the ending...which I will not give away.

OK this is NOT for the faint of heart.
I once saw this Korean movie called "Ichi the killer". The plot is really dumb and the acting...well...not the finest i've seen to say the least. I saw this Japanese movie and yes it has gruesome violence and bloody gore, infact it helps one to measure his/her GQ (Gore Quotient :D) and i found out that my GQ is pretty high :yahoo:....i was more into the creative aspect of how the blood was shed and in what ways pain can be inflicted on humans........I felt that the plot is not really a dumb nor the actors,it portrays the very darker side of us humans.

But seriously this movie is not at all for the faint of heart and those who are afraid of dark reality.Stay away from this movie unless you want to measure your GQ.

2 films I have watched in the last few days that have both been excellent

The first an old movie

Contact (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118884/)

I have not seen this film since it first came out all those years ago and I had forgotton how fantastic it is, The scene on the beach is amazing, great story and a film that really makes you think

I also watched

Australia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455824/)

This has just came out, a great epic about an english lady (Nicole Kidman) and an australian drover (Hugh Jackman) who have to herd cattle over the harsh northern Australian outback, set just before World War 2 The story can be a bit haphazard at times but I really enjoyed it, it is visually stunning, the scenes of the Australian outback are amazing.

I just sow Juno ! Its awesome. I think its romantic comedy or something like that, last thing I would want to see, but I heard good stories about this movie and they were true, movie is really fresh and simple and so wonderful. Its a good family movie as well. I read on Wikipedia that movie was a low budget and they never expected world wide success of it, which is true when you see that movie coasted 6,5 millions and earned more then 250 millions world wide and this is a huge success. Usually, high budget movies spend half of money on ads and stuff.

I'm making a movie night this evening, will be watching a few movies. I plan to see: Dead Like Me..Life After That (I only sow a few TV shows, I hope it won't matter when it comes to movie), Quarantine and Alien Raiders.

I hope that new Friday 13th comes to cinemas here fast, because I wanna see it. I love horror movies in cinema, sound is just.. no word to describe it

WOW, we just finished watching the film Hard Candy.

Netflix Synopsis

"In this suspenseful drama from director David Slade, Hayley (Ellen Page) is an intelligent teen who's been spending time with Geoff (Patrick Wilson), a much older man she met online. Even though Geoff is a charming, good-looking photographer, Hayley should know better than to go home with a guy in his early thirties, especially since he may have ulterior motives. Of course, Hayley may have underlying motives of her own..."

Made me think twice about meeting people from 'chat rooms' online (which I have never used 'chat rooms')....but still, wow, one never knows what's real and what's not. Wow, pretty scary, I'd say!

It's a well done film though.

Last night we watched Street Kings, it's recommended if you're into the whole scene of corrupt cops of L.A., where drugs, money, guns, pain, car chases, and death reign and along side all that anguish .... I recommend this film for it's killer soundtrack .... and not to mention it does have a bit of a stellar cast ....

The Netflix Synopsis reads out as ....

Street Kings

Still reeling from the death of his wife, Los Angeles detective Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) is devastated when he's named as a supect in the murder of his partner (Terry Crews). With the help of a young homicide detective (Chris Evans), Ludlow struggles to clear his name. His boss (Forest Whitaker), meanwhile, tries to protect him from a tough Internal Affairs investigator (Hugh Laurie) who's determined to put Ludlow behind bars.

Rated R. 1hr. 47 min. 2008.

K, now I got my nerdishness out the way, what I really came here to recommend was...

AMBITION TO MEANING!

Totally brilliant film and one that should be COMPULSORY VIEWING in this society of ours. It's a beautiful, uplifting, utterly inspiring, moving, heartfelt and frankly life-changing film. It's a kind of drama featuring different characters coming to terms with their lives, making the shift from ambition, grasping, materialism to a more purposeful, inspired, spiritual mode of being. Wayne Dyer is an absolute inspiration, a true Buddha, whose warm wisdom (much of which is based on the principles of Taoism) is just a joy to hear. This film is particularly important in these times of uncertain economics, when people are slowly awakening to the fact that life is not all about money in the first place...I'm certain this film will hasten that awakening.

I love this film so much and can't recommend it highly enough. If enough people watched it, this world would transform overnight.

It can be bought on amazon or even viewed online I believe; http://www.ambitiontomeaning.com/

The Netflix Synopsis reads out as ....

On the Waterfront

Terry Malloy (Oscar-winner Marlon Brando) is a washed-up boxer turned longshoreman who finds he has one fight left in him when he dares to take on corrupt union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb). A landmark "issue" picture, On the Waterfront is distinguished by great performances and excellent use of New York locations. It's also the winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Elia Kazan).

Rated UR. 1hr. 47 min. 1954.

It's a classic and should be viewed by all, if you haven't seen it already! :)

Oh yeah, and this film is the origin of the famous, very famous line .... "I coulda been a contender" .... played out by Marlon Brando himself .... :)

The Visitor, we watched this film back in the fall and I can't remember if I've already mentioned here or not .... but it is an excellent film .... and I recommend it to you all! :)

The Netflix Synopsis reads out as ....

Widowed professor Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins, in an Oscar-nominated role) discovers an immigrant couple, Tarek (Haaz Sleiman) and Zainab (Danai Gurira), squatting in his Manhattan flat and becomes wrapped up in their lives when Tarek is thrown into a detention center. A wonderful Hiam Abbass co-stars as Tarek's mother, who forges an unlikely connection with Walter. Thomas McCarthy won a Best Director Independent Spirit Award for his touching drama.

Rated: PG-13. 1hr 43min. 2007.

Review by Follow Netflix-er 'Creeper'

"The Visitor is exceptionally well-acted and full of interesting, wholly authentic and relatable characters that effectively carry the viewer through what might best be described as a bumpy plot; sometimes breezy, other times heavy-handed. The deliberately-paced story follows an emotionally disabled professor continuing to mourn the passing of his wife as he stumbles mechanically through the pages of his life. When unexpected friends provide a reason to reawaken, the film takes on a feel of importance; a message that life is worth living and people worth caring about regardless of circumstance. Very well-written, I was surprised by the quality here. Recommended."

I was there for the Midnight premier of "Watchmen." I loved it. However the one sex-- I mean soft core porn scene could have been shorter. It was awkward since I was with a group of mixed-company friends. Plus, the blue dude made me feel... inadequate? LOL

Also, a movie I watched this weekend, and HIGHLY recommend is "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." It has a surprise twist at the end that will leave you in tears and/or with your mouth hanging open staring at the screen while the credits roll. Extremely powerful, though a bit unrealistic. I don't watch alot of movies, and I certainly own fewer-- I BOUGHT this one. It belongs on the shelf next to "Schindler's List." When watching it keep in mind: It's not about Nazi versus Jew, but about an innocent boy trying to understand and cope with a world gone mad around him.

I recommend this documentry film if you have seen and enjoyed .... The Visitor. The Lives of Others. Hotel Rwanda. The Straight Story. City of God. Water. Tsotsi. and Nowhere in Africa. .... which incidentally I have seen all these films and they too are recommended.

The Netflix Synopsis reads out as follows ....

God Grew Tired of US.

After raising themselves in the desert along with thousands of other parentless "lost boys," Sudanese refugees John, Daniel and Panther have found their way to America, where they experience electricity, running water and supermarkets for the first time. Capturing their wonder at things Westerners take for granted, this documentary, an award winner at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, paints an intimate portrait of strangers in a strange land.

Length: 89 mins

Romulus,My Father : This movie is he best of them all, based on a true story, this portrays what it means to have a loving father and also how is it to not to have a caring mother......I usually tend to get critical while watching movies but this one was just truth, simple and with very powerful emotions.....I am glad i saw this movie :Boy_yes3:

Forgot to add....great soundtrack to this film!!!

Well, I haven't seen the movie yet, but I just heard parts of the soundtrack on XM Radio Cinemagic Channel 76 and you're right, from what I have heard it does have a great soundtrack ..... *hm* ..... I think I might just skip over to www.netflix.com and put the movie in our queue!! Thanks Lorri!

Saw Groundhog Day over the holidays. Haven't seen it for ages and its an excellent film about a guy who is incredibly self centred and ends up reliving the same day over and over again. At first he realises that there are no consequnces and then realises that life has no meaning like this. He then goes on to try and change to change the situation as he accepts he has alternatives to the self destructive path.
Anyone who hasn't seen it will enjoy it and Bill Murray is his usual smart alec self!

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Highly Recommended to all!

Netflix Synopsis reads out as ...

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
In 1995, author and Elle magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby suffered a stroke that put him in a coma; he awakened mute and completely paralyzed. Mathieu Amalric stars in this adaptation of Bauby's autobiography, which he dictated by blinking. Julian Schnabel was nominated for the 2008 Best Director Oscar and won the Golden Globe in the same category for his poignant film about the strength of the human spirit.

Length: 112 min. Rated: P-G 13

An absolutely powerful and beautiful film on the ever unique ... human spirit!

Max van Sydow's performance is simply captivating! (I really couldn't help myself with him.) He is a fine, very fine actor! Everyone did a fabulous job, but Max's won it for me!

Warning ... it is a tear-jerker film.

Saw Australia over the weekend. I have to say it was much better than I expected.
Its set with the WWII backdrop and the racism towards the Aborigine people...the thread is the love story between the two main characters. Its a long one but worth the viewing :)

Oh, I love the fifth element also! I was watching it recently. Also, the part when the alien lady sings....I think it would have been awesome if they would have used Michael Cretu to compose.

This morning I woke up to "Schindlers List" I only caught the last hour. But, wow, now I just have to see the whole thing, but I have to catch it on.

Interesting: This morning which is May 1, I started another cleansing/fasting ritual, and last year the same time I did a seven day fast starting May 1st. Whats interesting is the fact that it seems that much Nazi/Holocust documentaries are on this time of year. Viewing holocost documentaries actually help me find strength thruought the fast.

On a quick side note: I watched this show called "the doctors" yesterday. And they had a young lady with some sort of twitching disorder...I forgot what it is called exactly, but starts with a D, and I was just crying my eyes out as I watched this beautiful person have to live with a seemingly uncomfortable disability.

Ooh I'm going to see it later today, and I can't wait!! It's been getting absolutely rave reviews from the critics. I've long been a closet Trekkie too (although I kind of gave up on the last couple of spin-offs and the Next Gen movies were a disappointment, except First Contact of course), so I was so excited when I heard JJ Abrams was resurrecting the franchise. Seriously seriously good. Was absolutely gripped from the opening frame and surprised at what an emotional wallop it packed. The cast were great. I never thought I'd ever find Captain Kirk so darn hunky! Chris Pine was great and is surely a big star in the making, and I loved Simon Pegg, the guy playing Bones, Uhura and the others (can't remember their names). And it was great to see Leonard Nimoy after all these years - he brought a real dignity and class to it. It was just fantastic. Not only a great Star Trek film (totally unlike any that's preceded it though) but a great film full stop. Perfect blend of action, comedy, suspense and emotion. Well, i'm not sure where to post this but..... it's about a movie that might be coming out in 2010 or 2011.

Who does remember: He-Man and the Masters Of The Universe? Not the cheap movie with Dolph Lundgren but i'm talking about the toyline and the animated series of the 80's. In my childhood days i was a huge fan of this stuff.

Yep, it's seems that they are going to make a complete new live action movie out of it. I still don't know excactly what the movie will be called, one site says it's He-Man and the Masters Of The Universe another says that the title is changed to Grayskull or Grayskull: Masters Of The Universe.
What to expect? I read something about sceneries like The Lord of The Rings, 300 and so on, if i'm not mistaken.

Anyway, i'm excited what this movie will be if..... only if they're really pulling this thing through. :D

Twilight - Watched this slast night, never read the book, all I knew was it was about vampires, but I really enjoyed it, good story, great cast and a fantastic soundtrack. looking forward to "New Moon" The next installment

Star Trek - Waited for what seemed like years for this to arrive and really wanted it to succeed and in my eyes it did, Visually it was superb and I thought Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the crew really seemed to fit the parts, I hope this does reboot the franchise and there is more to come...

The Hangover - A Las Vegas-set comedy centered around three groomsmen who lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps in order to find him. Pretty predictable but very funny, I really enjoyed this.

When he believes that his human, Penny, has been kidnapped, he sets out on a cross-country journey to "rescue" her. Another highly amusing movie , a bit like Toy Story, love the cat called Mittens.

A guy finds the tree of life, promises that he will put on a ring for the Queen of Spain Isabella when he finds it; he gets greedy, takes a bite; gaining immortality -- but this kills the tree. He immortal, must relive with her, through her various incarnations. He seeks reparation eventually by attempting to make her immortal. Finally at the end of time, he becomes "an entity'. This allow him to go back in time -- which he does. This causes the time continuum to change and a paradox, because his super-entity continues to live.

Inspired casting and the characters look amazing

Alice (http://scifiwire.com/2009/07/new-alice-images-poster-b.php)

Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat and, of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen's reign of terror. The all-star cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Crispin Glover.

Capturing the wonder of Lewis Carroll's beloved Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871) with stunning, avant-garde visuals and the most charismatic characters in literary history, Alice In Wonderland comes to the big screen in Disney Digital 3D on March 5, 2010.

I've been watching alot of movies in the past week or so and one that I just love was an Indian Film called Joddha Akbar. It's based off the true events of a Mougal Muslim Ruler who invaded parts of India in the 1500's and formed a marriage alliance with a Hindu princess. It's epic and I loved it. (Not to mention the lead actor...)

I watched Planet of the Apes again. This time it was the 2001 version. I am liking this.......

As you guys may know, we had this movie thread on the EMB, and Gen was talking about Planet of the Apes, and we kind of made fun of it like as if it were a boring movie. and the truth was that I've never seen it...I just always assumed it was boring and never watched it. So, I promised her and others that one day I would watch it......so, now I am hooked..but, it comes on randomly...here and there, so I try to catch it, and I always tend to catch it on the late night tip. so, also, when I finished watching it, I then watched a documentary about Palestanian rappers....anyone seen this? It was awesome! Amazing! and as a black American, we know why we started hip hop. We wanted our voiced to be heard. And now adays, its mostly about bragging and women. But, in the doc, the Palestanians were explaining how they didn't even understand English, but when looking at the videos, they knew what we were talking about...they knew we were fighting a fight...they knew we were a voice that wanted to be heard...they knew we were telling a story they wanted the world to hear. And now they are following suite. the only thing that concerns me is that now a days, I don't think the average rapper even knows the effect we have on the planet. Rap can be a powerful tool...we need to start using it again in the way we intended in the beginning. I was very pleased with the documentary...but, they even were wearing their pants sagging. Us females well maybe I should say more mature females...we don't like that. We like the music, but the pants sagging thing....I sort of hate that we are influencing other children in other countries to wear thier clothes like that...because the thought is that the idea of pants sagging and clothes to large came from slavery days because the clothes didn't fit, and we couldn't have belts...which also represent prison attire........so, I think and wish rappers would be more responsible because obviously, rap is all over the world, and can be a tool to send a message...so, lets open our ears and eyes again....even above the sagging pants....LOL

Robert Downey Jr was fantastic, but it was just in really bad taste and not funny enough to justify that (i'm not normally that easily offended either). I was thinking of going to see it for my birthday. Don't go to the cinema much, partly because it's a bit away and also because its so expensive now (when it costs as much to get a cinema ticket as to actually own the film somethings wrong!).

I have a couple of questions though....what's with the 3D thing? Do you get those 3D glasses at the cinema? Don't know how that works! And also, what is the level of violence in the film? I hate watching violence and am very strict about which films I watch because of it. I don't care if that makes me sound like an old grandad, its a good rule for me. I can just about cope with the battle scenes in Lord of the Rings but wouldn't want anything in excess of that. I've heard that while the first part of Avatar is a bit of a bloodbath.

Hmm...I wouldn't say bloodbath but I would say that its only a low certificate so its not too explicit and also is a necessary part of the film showing a war scene...highllighting man's penchant for violence as a mean's to an end. Its definitely not worse than what you would have seen in LOTR Rory. The 3d effects make it even more....I loved it in 3D so did Martin....and yes, we got the glasses from the cinema but they weren't the old paper ones...these were like proper sunglasses and much more comfortable to wear! There are scenes with the aliens and thier world that are just spectacular in 3D!!

Loved Avatar!! A real cinematic experience, breathtaking from start to finish. Now, it's not a perfect film, I can see why the critics have been a bit reticent in their praise...the plot is thin and very familiar and the characters aren't nearly as three-dimensional as they look (ironic!), but the film really comes alive in its incredible attention to detail, direction, and effects. I don't think I've ever seen a better and more vital depiction of an alien world in cinema. I didn't know what to expect from the 3D but it was incredible...it was almost like being IN the film. Extremely immersive. Makes me wonder how long before we'll actually have holodecks like in Star Trek! Definitely a film to be seen in the cinema in 3D. My initial reaction is still the best: WOW!

Oh yes, and I loved the messages and depth that was presented by the alien species...the interconnectedness and oneness of life, being attuned and aware of our connection to the natural world. It presented a very real portal to spirituality that I think many will have found accessible, or which may have planted the seeds of some kind of awakening. That was probably what i liked most about it. It was subtle, but I was so glad to see that message and undercurrent there. I didn't think James Cameron had it in him actually, LOL, I was muchly impressed :)

Netflix synopsis reads out as ...

The Story of the Weeping Camel. This unique documentary follows a Mongolian camel that's rejected her newborn white colt. Now, all hope lies with two young shepherd boys, who must travel across the Gobi desert to find a healing musician. Will the violinist's ritual do the trick? This Oscar-nominated film moves beyond its narrative structure to offer a keenly observed portrait of nomadic herders who are preserving an ancient way of life.

Length: 87 mins
Genre: Documentry

In my own words: This intimate film is truly a beautiful insight into the Mongolian life, for both Humans and Animals, and how they coexist together, in the harsh and the ever unforgiving environment of the Gobi. If you have patience, an appreciation for indie and documentry films and have an open mind ... you will truly enjoy the profound subtleties of the Human and Animal Spirit.

Highly recommended for my fellow MW-ers! :)

Thanks Polly I will have to check that out.

I have another recommendation: THE MAN FROM EARTH.

This award-winning film, released a couple of years ago, was written by renowned sci-fi writer Jerome Bixby who wrote episodes of the original Star Trek and Twilight Zone. This manuscript was completed on his death bed and its a remarkable film. It was filmed on a tight budget and although it is basically just a handful of characters in a room talking, it's extremely well-written and very compelling, without ever once starting to get dull.

It's a sci-fi fantasy about an immortal man who had lived on earth since the stone age, and has witnessed the incredible changes the world has undergone. His perspectives on culture and religion make for an intelligent, captivating and thought-provoking film. There are some incredible and controversial twists which make the film quite remarkable (although some Christians might find their noses a bit out of joint). I definitely recommend it highly, if you are like me and like your sci-fi intelligent, thought-provoking and philosophical, then you'll love this. Immediately become one of my favourite films :)

Netflix.com synopsis reads out as ...

The Snow Walker: Barry Pepper stars in this survivalist adventure as cocky, hotheaded bush pilot Charlie Halliday, who agrees to transport a critically ill Inuit woman (Annabella Piugattuk) to a Yellowknife hospital during a routine stop on a supply run. The pair face dire consequences when their plane goes down in the Arctic tundra, leaving them marooned -- and facing the brutality of the looming northern winter.

Length: 109mins.

In my own words: This is a beautiful story of transformation in the Human Spirit whichs takes place in the high tundra of the breath taking Northwest Territories. Two strangers come together, an ex-WW2 pilot is on a supply run when agrees to help a sick Inuit woman. When their planes crashes ... they are forced to live and sruvive together. The companionship they build is one that is Life altering for both .... a truly beautiful and sweet film of the Human Spirit's journey.

The stuff of dreams -- not just the content, but the circuitry and neurological coding, too -- is the subject of this penetrating "Nova" inquiry into the most mystifying of human activities. Researchers are taking a variety of investigative tacks, from "eavesdropping" on sleeping rats to methodical studies of thousands of dreams, in an effort to fill in the blanks of understanding. Their findings give tantalizing glimpses of the mind at rest.

I loved Alice! Not one of Burton's greatest, but still an excellent one.
Also, i think i hate Anne Hathaway.
Also(2), the actress that played Alice sucked.
But all-in-all i still enjoyed it. Helena Bonham-Carter was great as the queen of hearts and Johnny Depp was brilliant as usual.

If no one has already done this, I'm doing it here and now.
I'm usually unable to get out to theatres, so any movies I see are DVD purchases. And yes, I'm still asking myself why I don't rent... Anyway...
If you haven't seen "Paranormal Activity", don't. Save you money for dinner or an art exhibit.
It was serious;y Lame.
If you feel you really must have a 'spooky night' check out the "Spooky Video" thread. It's far more...spooky.
