Still a little too early for me to be getting into Christmas music, I find that when Christmas starts too early it kind of spoils it, so I'll wait til we're into December.

I really like listening to the oldies from way before my time, like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and co. I go through phases where I dig the retro songs of the 50s and 60s. They capture a nostalgia and warmth that's missing from most of the Christmas songs from more recent years.

There are a couple of Christmas albums by familiar artists that are quite good - Enya has a nice Winter album released a couple of years back. Sure, it's pretty much the same sound as all her other albums (she clearly doesn't like to deviate from her chosen sound!) but it's very pleasant. Sarah McLachlan has a nice album called Wintersong, which is maybe a little downbeat and melancholic, but it's nice to listen to on occasion. When the time comes I'll be back with more songs and playlists :)

Here is a little taster of some of my favourite christmas songs....

Thank you for posting those!
Two of my all-time favourites are Judy Garland's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)."
And who cannot smile at the infectious deliciousness of the Darlene Love gem?
The other two were new to me, but I love them. You are about to make me an Il Divo convert. Such glorious singing.....

Yes their voices are so well matched and yet so individually distinctive. I have all their albums and they have a gorgeous Christmas one (which i think is only available in the US but a very nice friend posted it over to me here :)) and you can check out a lot of their music on youtube.
Glad you enjoyed them :)

Most christmas music goes over my head like background music, but this is one stand out track that when I hear it every year for the first time it officially begins the countdown to Christmas

A classic tune, I love it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLb213lak5s&feature=related

It was christmas eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me: won't see another one
And then they sang a song
The rare old mountain dew
I turned my face away and dreamed about you
Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I´ve got a feeling
This year´s for me and you
So happy christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
Where all our dreams come true.

They got cars big as bars
They got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It´s no place for the old
When you first took my hand on a cold christmas eve
You promised me broadway was waiting for me
You were handsome you were pretty
Queen of new york city when the band finished playing they yelled out for more
Sinatra was swinging all the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night.

And the boys from the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out for christmas day.

You´re a bum you´re a punk
You´re an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy christmas your arse I pray god it´s our last.

And the boys of the NYPD choir's still singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out
For christmas day.

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can´t make it out alone
I´ve built my dreams around you

And the boys of the NYPD choir's still singing Galway Bay
And the bells are ringing out
For christmas day.

I'm actually disappointed with the Glee Christmas album, try before you buy. The problem is the song choices and some of the interpretations, I only really like about half the songs. That said, I really loved the Glee Christmas episode! Funny and touching :D

I think any Christmas playlist ought to begin and end with this. I love it. Bing Crosby is the voice of Christmas, his singing reminds me of my grandad too.

I really enjoyed that episode as well. When it started, I had some trepidation, but, once I opened myself up to it, it won me over. It was very funny, and it tugged at the heartstrings in the best of ways.

This song is wonderful.
There are many Christmas or holiday songs that are familiar or pleasing to the ear, but this one is unabashedly direct---hitting not just one's ears, but the mind and the gut.

Yeah, I would never have watched anything like Glee until I kept getting recommendations from friends. It's now my favourite TV show. It's uplifting, feel-good and very funny (I love Sue).

The Christmas album grew on me a little after a couple of listens, although it's still not quite classic.

My Christmas playlist is taking shape. There are 2 main playlists - cheesy Christmas pop and the golden oldies. I'll share them later.

I saved this one for last from me. It is hard to explain, but it truly strikes emotional chords with me, even though I heard it for the first time only two years ago. Some of you may be more familiar with it. (The song was written by Howard Blake.)

The music struck me so deeply that I sought its source and discovered this video (and more). It is not only beautiful, but it brushes up against my life-long desire for self-propelled flight, soaring throughout the universe.

I wish all of you hearts and spirits as full of joy as this music conjures in me.
