It is truly a wonderful song from one of the greatest living composers. Thank you for posting the Judy Collins version. I was fortunate to hear her perform it in concert once upon a time....

I am grinning from ear to ear. The score by John Kander and Fred Ebb for Cabaret is great, as was the musical play, but Director Bob Fosse took that material and fashioned it into a true cinematic work of art. Thanks for appreciating it!

Lorri, this is one of my favourite movies as well. For you and anyone else interested, Turner Classic Movies is showing Meet Me in Saint Louis as part of its "Essentials" series tomorrow (December 11). In the U.S. eastern time zone, it will be telecast at 8 p.m. I am not sure how far TCM's reach is, but it boasts international versions in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Latin America, and Asia. The "Essentials" series presents specially selected film classics deemed essential viewing for movie lovers. I heartily applaud this film's inclusion.

Agreed! Totally!
And was not "Consider Yourself" simply choreographed, directed, and performed so expertly in the movie? Great stuff!

I Love the story of Oliver Twist, (anybody who knows me could probably guess why) the musical makes it that much better..

Another great musical I like is Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, I remember learning the songs from it at school and have seen it so so many times in various forms

Wow! I shall not embroider this message with a lot of detail, since I am veering away from the musicals theme, but I am a Dickens fan and, especially, an Oliver Twist fan. I have read the novel twice, and I have been steadily watching all of the film adaptations of the tale (in chronological order, no less). I applaud your fine taste, Sean.

Full disclosure here (gulp). "On the Street Where You Live" is a song I sing fairly regularly (in private, of course), just to keep my gradually-deteriorating voice somewhat limber. (No snickering!)
I decided long ago that, if I ever sang publicly again (which I do not), I would include this wonderful ballad in my repertoire.

It is a beautiful song Anjou and fair play to you for owning up....I have to admit to singing I Could Have Danced all Night on occasions and in private!!! lol

And while I am peeling off a few layers, I have also been known to sing another favourite posted here: "Close Every Door," from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. (Trust me. Donny Osmond need fear nothing.)
My attempts with Queen's "We Are the Champions" and Devo's "Whip It" are more appropriate for a different thread....

Yes :)) I've only been once to see a musical few years ago, show was called "Lights of the stage" and it was something like a BEST OF from all the most successful shows from last 20 years.. It was a premiere actually, first show in the renovated theater, it was a nice experience.. I was in theater numerous time before that, but never to see a musical.. Had no idea it was so much different..

As for those I sow on TV and later DVD, I have to say I love "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and most cartoons I've seen.. Do you count cartoons as musicals ? I do :)) I also loved Glee's version of Rocky Horror..

I love this version of this song from Les Miserables.....and also from Glee.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp7ARm2Lwdo

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
(But the tigers come at night)
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
(As they tear your hope apart)
And they turn your dream to shame

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

"One Song Glory"
Rent
Music and Lyrics by Jonathan Larson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hloIgAU6I0o

One song
Glory
One song
Before I go
Glory
One song to leave behind

Find one song
One last refrain
Glory
From the pretty boy front Man
Who wasted opportunity

One song
He had the world at his feet
Glory
In the eyes of a young girl
A young girl

Find glory
Beyond the cheap colored lights
One song
Before the sun sets
Glory -- on another empty life

Time flies -- time dies

Glory -- One blaze of glory
One blaze of glory – glory
Find
Glory
In a song that rings true
Truth like a blazing fire
An eternal flame

Find
One song
A song about love
Glory
From the soul of a young man
A young man

Find
The one song
Before the virus takes hold
Glory
Like a sunset
One song
To redeem this empty life

Time flies
And then - no need to endure anymore
Time dies
