I've been rewatching some of my favourite films . I realised how much I love beautiful films...in terms of visual beauty, but also emotional depth and spiritual beauty. This thread is dedicated to beautiful films - primarily in terms of visual beauty (since its a visual medium) but perhaps also emotional and spiritual beauty as well.

Post your favourite beautiful films here.

I'm starting with HERO by Zhang Yimou - one of the most breathtakingly gorgeous films I've ever seen with extraordinary use of colour... (divided into different segments each with a specific colour theme)

AI: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, a very underrated work by Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick, I recently rewatched it and found it stunning (and very very sad)

Haha Amelie was going to be my next film Polly, great minds! Every shot is beautiful, and the film has such heart, humanity and joy! And I love Neverending Story too Lorri, that was also going to be a choice. It's another of my faves and was an influence in my book :) Keep them coming, I'd love to see some new choices and films which I perhaps haven't seen yet.

Here's another classic...

It's ironic that a film depicting such a bleak future could be so breath-takingly striking, but Blade Runner is a visual masterpiece and possibly my favourite science fiction film. Sci-fi meets art. Vangelis's score is equally beautiful (the 3 disc anniversary edition is the one to get!)

One of my absolute favorites since it's release is "The Fifth Element". Every time I watch it and it gets to the part where the watcher realizes that the fifth element needed to save the Earth is Love, tears stream down my face.

Now that's weird you should say, but I just watched the Fifth Element for the first time a couple of days ago, it was on the rental list of dvds and I'd never seen it before. I enjoyed it - very wild, wacky, weird and beautiful, kind of like a strange combination of Stargate and Blade Runner with big dollops of humour. Also loved the revelation that the fifth element that could save the world is love. Inspired touch.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy are astoundingly beautiful and, in my view, the best fantasy films ever made. The Two Towers and Return of the King are perhaps the most visually breath-taking of the trilogy.

I agree with you, Rory. This film is underrated. I did not see it in the cinema but, later, on video. Given the public's relatively lukewarm response to it, I was not expecting it to be as affecting as it was/is. Perhaps its darker/sadder elements kept mass audiences at a distance, which is fine. I responded to them.

Kudos to Kubrick for his genius imagination. And kudos to Spielberg for bringing Kubrick's vision to the screen in such a beautiful, meaningful way. (The universe needs a few more blue fairies/guardian angels/dear friends.)

I agree Anjou! It got a lot of criticism for being 'sentimental', but for me this is an unfair comment. It was about love, longing and a desperation for belonging and to be whole - a drive at the very core of the human condition. I guess that's why I found it very moving. I don't know what the final message was. Was the real tragedy that David couldn't let go? It was very powerful and bittersweet. Some aspects of the film were maybe a little bit misjudged (thinking the flesh fayre - but even then, it makes a relevant point about how depraved our 'entertainment' can become and how it can be used to boost people's egos and sense of self/identity). Definitely an underrated classic :)

Some may think I'm crazy, and it's true. I am. But I feel this movie belongs in this thread... Avatar. They did things to create this that have never been done before. The visuals are exceptional. But most of all for myself it is the message within the movie. No other movie has stirred my spirit as this one has.

Here's another classic...

http://www.freemooviesonline.com/images/stories/wallpaper/1/2001-a-space-odyssey-2-1024.jpg

2001: A Space Odyssey is both a classic and beautiful. Yes, it is composed and photographed beautifully, but it also has a beautiful soul---if an inanimate object, such as a strip or reel of film, can have a soul. I came to this masterpiece late, but I love it, and it becomes more meaningful to me each time I watch it.

I fondly recall when Turner Classic Movies telecast this film on New Year's Eve 2000. It started (I believe) at 11 p.m. (eastern U.S. time) on December 31 and ended sometime in the early morning of January 1, 2001. I savoured every minute.

Very cool Anjou! I read this book long before I saw the film and have to agree it was stunning and Kubrick was a great visionary to bring Arthur C Clarke's superb book to the big screen. Have to say I read all the Odyssey books and loved all of them.

2001 is indeed remarkable, poetic, visionary - it was only a couple of years ago I watched it for the first time, shocking I know. I loved it, was confused by it, but loved it! :D Really an epic piece of film-making, showing just how wonderful the medium can be. True art.

Yeah, i had mixed feelings about the film somehow and was overall left with a slightly depressed feeling in spite of the visual beauty. Apparently they altered significant parts from the novel to make it more 'cinematic' or dramatic, I don't know. The beautiful bits were tear-jerkingly lovely, and the hell-bits were really disturbing. Those two aspects didn't gel together that well, making the film feel uneven and a bit confused in its message. If I ever watch it again I'll only watch the first half I think ;)

You should read the book Rory as I totally got the film having read it first but there was a lot missed out in the film which did make it a little confusing.

I have always loved this film especially as I read the Isaac Asimov book (from which this is taken) many years ago. Unfortunately, I find the older I get, the more I cry at the film and his need to be recognised for the unique being he is. If you haven't seen this film it is well worth watching.
