I learned this song in elementary school, but it wasn't until recently that I learned the songs origin while watching PBS.
The original song title was "Mbube" or "Owimaway" and was written by Solomon Linda. A Zulu man who's daughter died impoverished from complications of HIV/AIDS.
It is believe to have come from a Zulu song which honoured the Lion Mother, and is the origin of the animated movie "The Lion King" by Disney.

Past tense. Listening to them now and I understand why my father couldn't handle their music. Fortunately I quickly grew out of this 'spite-music' phase.

I always think of my father when I hear this as it was one of his faves! I grew up listening to this and still find it wonderful...the only other version that I like is Annie Lennox's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb3iPP-tHdA

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see."
But I wandered through my playing cards
And they would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open wide
They might have just as well been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, "I'm here on a shore leave,"
Though we were miles at sea.
I pointed out this detail
And forced her to agree,
Saying, "You must be the mermaid
Who took King Neptune for a ride."
And she smiled at me so sweetly
That my anger straightway died.

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is it's queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

When I was younger I remember a local man built a boat in his garden, A huge thing, he woked on it for years and years in his garden in a grotty council estate. I used to pass it every day, and one day the council stopped the traffic and moved the boat to the river to test it out, It worked, not sure how far he actually got in it but this song always reminds me of him and his dream...

Orchestral rock: Edvard Grieg filtered through the Electric Light Orchestra

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0Bt7_vslAc

Grieg's "In der Halle des Bergkönigs" was composed for Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt, a fantasy play written in verse.

The sequence illustrated by the music of "In the Hall of the Mountain King" occurs when Peer sneaks into the Mountain King's castle. The piece then describes Peer's attempts to escape from the King and his trolls.

Great through headphones.

Ok, im going to take you down roads Im sure most, if not none, of you even heard of. I had the distinct pleasure of growing up in one of the worlds great music meccas in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn (although back then almost no one really understood that). WillyB was then and is still generally the heart of the music underground.

Im going to start with an artist whose life was tragic, but who left a legacy that dominates the music world today.

In the 2 month period of September and October of 1970, the world lost three of its most influential artists. TWo of them, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin are widely known and celebrated. The third was unknown in the mainstream even though he was a regular touring partner of Sly and the Family Stone. But both the hip hop and breakbeat worlds owe their existance to rockers like this individual....Baby Huey. Baby Huey died of a heart attack in October 1970, the direct result of a glanular condition that resulted in extreme obesity. He took the stage name of Baby Huey as a sort of tongue in cheek way of making fun of what was a very serious health problem. Like Jimi and Janis, he was just 27 when he passed and in the world I came from, he was a much bigger artist than either of them. Sadly, the world forgot this man. But ask modern day hip hop and breakbeat producers which artists influenced them most, and most will include this man on their list.

Now this next tune is one I consider one of the best songs ever written. Performed by the british progressive outfit Babe Ruth, it ironically is considered a BBoy classic today. Featuring the voice of Jenny Haan, this song was recently featured in the movie Samuri Jack and has been remixed countless times, most notably by Jellybean Benitez (made his career!)

From the album First Base, The Mexican

Now I hated disco, with a passion. But every so often one of those artists would do something that would make me stand up and pay attention. Eddie Drennon is best known for mega disco hits like Lets Do the Latin Hustle (barf!!!). But on that same album was this track, which is loaded with atmosphere and intended structured ambience. This song was a game changer for me as an artist and is deeply rooted in what would become Black Ether.

Now everybody's heard of Get Ready from Rare Earth, but in the world I came from, that song was child's play. You were no one if you didnt have this record, now one of the rarest albums on the planet featuring the WillyB rock classic, "I couldn't Believe What Happened Last Night"

And yes I have the record!

Was anyone else as affected by this genius song as I was… and still am?

“Hide in Your Shell,” by Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies
Originally from Supertramp’s Crime of the Century

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DysyxQNELxk&playnext=1&list=PL2B57A0039252E43A

Hide in your shell, ‘cause the world is out to bleed you for a ride.
What will you gain, making your life a little longer?
Heaven or Hell, was the journey cold that gave you eyes of steel?
Shelter behind, painting your mind and playing joker.
Too frightening to listen to a stranger
Too beautiful to put your pride in danger
You’re waiting for someone to understand you,
But you’ve got demons in your closet
And you’re screaming out to stop it
Saying life’s begun to cheat you
Friends are out to beat you
Grab on to what you can scramble for
Don’t let the tears linger on inside now
‘Cause it’s sure time you gained control.
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know.
Well, let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road.
If I can help you, if I can help you
If I can help you, just let me know.

You're welcome dearest .... and yep, I am always 'In the Mood' when I come here too! :)

(On a trivial note) You know its funny back when I was kid, my sister and I attended the same Catholic School (all thanks to our parents subjection - even though we were not raised Catholics). She and I dreaded going to school so, in order to motivate herself everyday ... she would slap on Glenn Miller's record (and I mean an actual vinyl record) and play this tune to get herself moving and dressed and off to school! Everytime I hear this tune I think of those mornings, though I am not reminded of the dread of going to school, but of the fun we found in those mornings. My sister is so cool and I love her to bits! :)

Many years ago ... I was fortunate enough to have walked by Joan Baez in New Bedford Ma. Just call my name and Ill be there

Ill be there to comfort you,
Build my world of dreams around you, Im so glad that I found you
Ill be there with a love thats strong
Ill be your strength, Ill keep holding on

Let me fill your heart with joy and laughter
Togetherness, well thats all Im after
Whenever you need me, Ill be there
Ill be there to protect you, with an unselfish love that respects you
Just call my name and Ill be there

If you should ever find someone new, I know hed better be good to you
cause if he doesnt, Ill be there
Dont you know, baby, yeah yeah
Ill be there, Ill be there, just call my name, Ill be there
