To my surprise I couldn't find a thread dedicated to the amazing contribution of women in music. Something which is surely past due. So here it is.
A place to share, honour, and discuss the influences of women through-out musics history, past and present.

Women have always brought a strong and wonderfully unique essense to music.
I'll often grab for the CDs by female artist when feeling creative before male artist. For myself, their influences and contributions have always been remarkable. LOL. Within the past forty-eight hours I've only listened to female artists, as I still am.
Currently I'm listening to PINK. And probably will through-out the night.
She is Real. And an contemporary artist with True Extreme Pasion. She has a voice that would truly make Janis Joplin proud and is very moving to listen to.
She kicks and I love it.

Bat For Lashes (Natasha Khan) is officially my favourite singer/songwriter following her incredible second album Two Suns. It's alternative but still accessible. She creates extraordinary worlds with her songs and lyrics...a strong element of fantasy in her work. Love this song, but you need to be a little open-minded. I do believe she has set a higher bar for similar artists in the genre.

[I will rise now
And go about the city
In the streets
Broadways I seek
Him whom my soul loveth]

Went over the sea
What did I find?
A thousand crystal towers
A hundred emerald cities
And the hand of the watchman
In the night sky
Points to my beloved
A knight in crystal armour...

And I tried to hold him
I tried for the cream
I'll make a suit of colours
To stop the blinding mirrors
Sew a cape of rainbow
Stifle up the beam
With the perfect armour
With the perfect dream...

To be made of glass
When two suns are shining
The battle becomes blinding
To be made of glass
But we're light and light and light
and light and light!

And from two suns spinning
At two different speeds
Was born a hot white diamond
Burning through the rainbow
Flames fell into orbit
To hold eternally
Two heavenly spirits
That just wouldn't seem

To be made of glass!
When two suns are shining
The battle becomes blinding
To be made of glass
But we're light and light and light
and light and light!

Also been a big fan of Goldfrapp for years, although they are rather more a duo than a solo artist, although Alison Goldfrapp lends her name to the project. This is my favourite song from their new album.

Florence Welch aka Florence and the Machine! Another talented singer/songwriter, whose multi-award winning debut album "Lungs" was a highlight of 2009. She has a bohemian quality and a deft ability to blend genres to create something new and fresh. This is the video for the final single from the album and one of my favourites, "Cosmic Love"

Personally not a fan of J.M.'s,
but she certainly did make an impact on the music industry during her time,
when the industry was still rather male dominated.
With her free floating feminine ways and,
her unusual songwriting and her trademark way of singing,
she certainly did garner great respect.

Also, where this video comes from 'The Last Waltz - The Band' is really worth checking out.
You'll find yourself tapping your foot, no doubt!! :)

Lady Gaga ! Yes, she is very young and new to the scene, but an amazing artist, who writes all her stuff and has some ideas, which may not be totally new, but are still fresh and I love her.. Her songs are full of emotions, also very normal girl from what I figured out by watching some interviews.. In my opinion, she is a game changer.. I'm tired while I write this, but I think of her as Nintendo Wii in a Sony PS3 market, new, incredible and awesome...

That's actually really funny. I laughed a lot at

It's no secret that my favourite musical artist is Jewel Kilcher. I think she's been a seriously underrated singer/songwriter/artist for 15 years now. He first album sold a whopping 27 million copies so I'm guessing our US members here will remember some of those hits but she's continued to release albums ever since and even has a new album due out June 8th but I'm guessing most people who know her, didn't know that.

Anyway, there are an amazing number of songs from her early catalogue that blew me away when I first heard her music. These 2 are her most well known and hold the most meaning for why I fell in love with her music all those years ago.

She wrote this when she was just 16. Listen to the lyrics. One very observant 16 year old do you think? I get goosebumps every time I hear this song
dawVmXN_Myg

This one is what made her famous in 1995. I really like it. It's a fun little song and written like a poem almost.
GVOFRZsdKeo

You probably don't know this one but this was one of her more controversial. Again, I recommend you listen to the lyrics and really hear what it is that she is saying. So many people missed the point. Essentially, she's saying Look in the mirror before you judge!

Yea, but what I like is that she sings with such big emotions, that I even stop caring about the word and lyrics.. Maybe, that is what music is truly about :)

Although I don't actually listen to much pop nowadays, I love Ladyhawke and her album of the same name. Although she's comparatively unknown, I far prefer her to Lady Gaga. Ladyhawke is more my lady - a talented New Zealand singer-songwriter with a delicious retro-80s vibe and some irresistable pop hooks. Check her out

I first heard Lisa Gerrard in the Gladiator soundtrack and was transfixed by her voice. I haven't explored many of her other works - I have a Dead Can Dance album which I wasn't quite won over by (didn't like the guy's singing much at all - far too morose for me), but I have recently explored some of her solo works. This song in particular I find extremely powerful. Some people say she has the voice of an angel, a cliche, but I don't think her voice is quite angelic to me - there's too much darkness and emotion in it, but it is utterly transcendent and bewitching and takes me to whole other dimensions. So much emotion and power.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_5nS12fNmw

"Then You Look At Me"

Laugh and cry
Live and die
Life is a dream we're dreaming

Day by day
I find my way
Look for the soul and the meaning

Then you look at me
And I always see
What I have been searching for
I'm lost as can be
Then you look at me
And I am not lost anymore

People run
Sun to sun
Caught in their lives ever flowing
Once begun
Life goes till it's gone
We have to go where it's going

[Chorus]

And you say you see
When you look at me
The reason you love life so
As lost I have been
I'll find love again
And life just keeps on running
And life just keeps on running
You look at me and life comes from you. From you.

That particular vocal track by O'Connor cuts to the very core of one's heart and soul.
Listening to the vocal is is both heart-wrenching and heart-breaking.
Watching the video makes the song even more personal... and painful, though the pain is leavened by empathy (for those of us who have visited that dark place).
